This event, is the first in a series of eight RIM Plus workshops to be organised during the period 2015-2016 and aims to explore the possibilities of further enhancing cooperation on concrete thematic areas (of advanced manufacturing) between stakeholders from different European regions.

The agenda of boosting the advanced manufacturing industry promoted by the Commission has indeed set in motion a number of wide ranging new initiatives and new approaches across the EU countries and regions. As a concrete example of bottom-up initiative, it is important to mention the Vanguard Initiative.5 It was established in January 2014 with the political commitment of EU regions to engage in growth-oriented collaborations based on combined strengths linked to EU priorities. The three areas selected as pilot cases are: High Performance Production with 3D Printing (led by Flanders), Efficient and Sustainable Manufacturing (led by Lombardy and Catalonia) and Advanced Manufacturing to meet the challenges for off-shore oil/gas and renewable energy applications (led by Scotland and the Basque Country).
